I like vampires. I love Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I am endlessly fascinated by the myriad adaptations of the book and how each version we’ve received over the past century or so expresses society’s changing attitudes and concerns as well as the shifts in entertainment trends. So of course I got revved up when I heard the BBC were making a series of Dracula. How could I not? I’m the nerd that owns Dracula 2000 on DVD and voluntarily watches it regularly. I sat through the 3D one Dario Argento made with the terrible giant CGI praying mantis! How could the BBC let me down with this?

Well… Steven Moffat.

Look, some of us are still not over the depressing downturn Sherlock made or how he took the earnest spirit of Russell T. Davies’s tenure on Doctor Who and overcomplicated it with giant mysteries he could never pay off. That doesn’t even get into his many problematic depictions of women. Dude has some blind spots, let’s put it kindly. I can already imagine the countless ways a Dracula adaptation could go haywire in his hands.

I have to admit though, the teaser trailer, which dropped yesterday, looks pretty good!

Dracula stars Danish actor Claes Bang in the lead role and if you are wondering, “is this dude Kayleigh’s type”: Yes he is. Not my top Dane but I’m easy. The series also stars Dolly Wells, Joanna Scanlan, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Morfydd Clark. It doesn’t currently have an airdate, but perhaps keep an eye out for the BBC Christmas line-up.

And here is my message to Steven Moffat and his Dracula team.
