It’s safe to say that when one thinks of the Marvel pantheon of heroes, the macaque version of Agent 47 is not the first that comes to mind. Yet here we are, with Hulu delivering murderous monkey mayhem in time for American families to gather around at Thanksgiving. Take a look.
Are you as turned on as I am right now? A very brief summation of Hit-Monkey’s history, for those of you who need plot along with simian swordplay: Once upon a time, an unnamed assassin failed his job and was marked for death. After escaping into the mountains he is found near-death by a troop of Japanese macaques. In true Jungle Book style he is nursed back to health by the benevolent beasts. Hit-Monkey distrusts this interloper but is still fascinated when he watches the hitman practice martial arts. Eventually, the hitman’s enemies track him down and kill everyone except our protagonist. Hit-Monkey swears revenge, puts on a three-piece suit, and goes looking for blood, guided by the assassin’s incorporeal spirit. It won’t surprise you that after his origin story he got a 3-issue run in Deadpool, where he went up against the titular character along with Spider-Man. They’re a lot of fun and worth checking out on the Marvel Unlimited app.
Featuring George Takei, Olivia Munn, and everyone’s favorite soccer coach Jason Sudekis as the chatty hitman, Hit-Monkey comes from writing duo Speck & Gordon. The two previously directed Blades of Glory, The Switch, and Office Christmas Party, and have a pair of animated movies on the way next year. Look for Hit-Monkey on Hulu this coming November 19.
