Former Bachelorette contestant Josh Seiter is alive after a cryptic message announcing his death was posted to his Instagram account on Monday.

“As you can see I am alive and well. My account was hacked. For the last 24 hours I had been trying desperately to get into it,” Seiter said in a video on Tuesday. The original death announcement post has been deleted.

He added, “Somebody was playing a cruel joke and mocking my mental illness and the struggles I’ve gone through with depression and suicide attempts.”

Seiter was a contestant on season 11 of Bachelorette but was sent home in the first week of the competition. He has since become internet famous for his mental health advocacy, identifying himself in 2021 as a suicide attempt survivor.

In June of this year, he came out as bisexual, having previously publicly identified as pansexual. He has been linked to several reality show contestants, one of them being Monica Beverly Hillz, the first queen to come out as trans while competing in Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Hillz posted a photo of herself and Seiter with the caption “RIP my honey” after hearing the false news on Monday. She then deleted that photo and spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the whole debacle.

“I’m baffled. I’m angry. I’m happy he’s alive, I’m happy he’s here, but this is so infuriating to me,” she said. She went on to explain their relationship history in detail, saying they met when she was a queen working in clubs and he was a go-go dancer. She called their relationship a “rollercoaster,” and said that from the moment they were publicly involved, people told her he was a “clout chaser” and urged her to “run.”

Hillz said they had been romantically involved as recently as last week, but they’d broken up after he texted her saying “‘Hey hun, I’m sorry, but I’m not good. My grandpa passed away this morning in his sleep. Heading to the airport now, my life is in shambles, and I can’t give you the time and dedication you deserve. Let’s remain friends. Thank you for being amazing.’”

“I suffer from mental issues, but I take medication and I see a therapist, but he doesn’t do that kind of stuff,” she claimed.

“Why is there no repercussion for him? Now he has his Instagram back so now he’s going to go back to what he’s doing, and nobody’s going to hold Josh accountable because, what? He’s a white, cis man. It really does bother me because trans women of color, people I know personally, are being attacked and murdered and nobody’s giving them the airtime they need, but Josh Seiter comes alone and he’s in the news, he’s everywhere.”

She claimed that, while she can’t speak to Seiter because he has her blocked, he has previously told her that he has more than one Instagram account, so he could have posted a message saying the death announcement was fake, or reached out to someone he trusted to have them do the same.

Hillz took to Instagram to share further thoughts.

She issued the same warning she received at the beginning of their relationship to any future reality stars who might cross his path: “Run. Don’t even do it. If you know what’s good for you, run.”

Seiter has denied all allegations that he perpetrated the hoax.
