Over the summer I binged the first season of Netflix’s The Diplomat. Once you got past the fact that everyone involved is way too good-looking to be involved in high-level diplomacy, it was an enjoyable show that was mostly honest about the fact that a lot of that job is phone calls, meetings, carefully constructed agendas, and wordy statements that are almost entirely meaningless. Kerri Russell and Rufus Sewell are having a blast, David Gyasi is very handsome, and Rory Kinnear is deeply slimey. All of that collided in the last episode of the first season when (spoilers ahead) Rufus Sewell goes to a meeting meant for his wife with some of her staff on his tail to keep him from disrupting her work, when a car bomb goes off in front of all of them. We see the explosion but not the aftermath, leaving us to wonder who survived the car bomb and will appear in the second season.

At least I did, up until I saw the below YouTube thumbnail for the second season trailer and then watched it which reveals indisputably that

Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler has survived, along with Ato Essandoh’s Stuart Hayford. See for yourself below, and perhaps avoid the stress of waiting until October 31st to find out what happened after that bomb went off.

Hey, Allison Janney shows up too! That’ll be fun. I mean, I’m not feeling any specific impetus to start watching as soon as the show is available but good to see what’s waiting for me.
