Schitt’s Creek has had an incredible journey. It began as a scrappy comedy with an eyebrow-raising title that scraped to find an audience. Slowly, its cult fandom grew to include celebs. By its last seasons, critics were cheering for it and Emmy snub allegations were rampant. Now, having wrapped a remarkable final season, Schitt’s Creek has been nominated for 15 Emmys, including acting nods for all four of the fictional Rose family: Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy. Following this thrilling news, the show’s co-creator and star Dan Levy swung by Late Night with Seth Meyers to describe what it’s been like to see the show’s fandom and acclaim grow.

Levy also explains how it’s super fitting that the show’s biggest awards moment could happen virtually. “The fact that we have fifteen nominations on a year when none of us will be able to attend,” Levy laughs, “feels very Schitt’s Creek.”

Levy also talks Canada pride, Instagram shaming from his real-life sister Sarah Levy, and the pre-Schitt’s Creek era, when he was a red-carpet reporter.

On one hand, this might seem a natural fit for Levy. His style has informed the fashion of Schitt’s Creek, which has sparked plenty of cosplays and everyday inspo for stylish fans. However, he explains, “It takes a very particular person to not be soul-crushed by the experience of interviewing on a red carpet. Because let’s be honest: Nobody on the carpet really wants to talk to anybody. So being the person who is like, ‘Well where did you get your dress from?’ You’re inherently not someone the person answering that question wants to talk to.”

Levy also demystifies this high-stress on-camera job, which involves lots of preparation and binders full of headshots and crucial information, like names, upcoming projects, and leads for questions. “For me it was just a disaster,” he recalls of doing the MTV Movie Awards red carpet coverage.

I have tried and failed to find footage of this red carpet that stressed Levy out so hard. However, in 2009, baby Levy did a Fashion Magazine internship for MTV Canada.

Levy also used to interview stars off the carpet. Here is he on The Kelly Clarkson Show looking back on the time he interviewed the singer before her talk show days. Then they talk about their shared music video hijinks.

And this has nothing to do with his red carpet past, but I can’t not share this adorable clip where Brooklyn Nine Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz fangirls out meeting Levy.

Are you crying? Because I am.

Time to fire up Schitt’s Creek on Netflix again.
