Conan Thought The Lyrics To Brown Eyed Girl Were Dirty

In the song Gin & Juice, Snoop Dogg is approached by a young lady. He is not interested in said young lady, as she used to step out with a colleague of his. Not wanting to be involved with her, he requests that she “raise up off these n-u-ts.” When you read it, it is clear what Snoop is trying to convey. Until recently, I thought he used a word I had never heard before “Enutees.” It doesn’t make any sense. Enutees is not a word! But that’s how I heard it, and I am not alone.

Conan O’Brien recently sat down with his podcasting cohorts, Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley, to discuss pop songs and how Conan has messed up lyrics in the past. He starts with the Neil Diamond hit Forever In Blue Jeans, which he misheard as Reverend Blue Jeans. Eventually, he gets to “Brown Eyed Girl.” I won’t spoil what he misheard in that song, but it is pretty wild. It’s even crazier when you find out how old he was.

Mishearing the lyrics to pop songs is not a new phenomenon. It is a fun one. I’m lucky to be married to someone who will sing incorrect lyrics to songs constantly. It can be as simple as replacing one word with another, like singing We Can Work It Out as “We Gon’ Work It Out.” There are also times when she replaces whole verses, often with gibberish. The point I’m making is I love my wife, and this is one of the many ways she brings me joy (which happens to be her name).

I could watch a whole show that is just people misremembering lyrics. Not in a game show-type scenario where they are trying to remember but can’t. I want a room with ten or twelve people that are having a good time and singing the wrong words to songs. If only I could get that many people to take the subway to 175th street.
