Ready for a bit of magic? Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and writer Yamara Taylor (Black-ish and The Boondocks) have teamed up to pen a pilot for a racebent Bewitched remake. And ABC has ordered the pilot to production.

The original 1960s series could do with an update. Its version centered on Samantha Stevens, a suburban housewife and mother who desperately sought to hide her witchy powers to make her ever-flustered husband comfortable. Masculinity so fragile was basically its tagline.

In Barris and Taylor’s version, Samantha will be a Black single-mom who marries Darin, who is no longer a snitty ad exec but instead “something of a slacker.” And per THR, “They will navigate their differences as Samantha discovers that even though she’s literally magical, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”

Likely, Samantha will still try to hide her powers, as Trump’s America is not ready for literal black girl magic. But let’s hope she’s hiding it solely to protect her family from ignorant morons, and not because her husband’s insecurity means she must hide her light under a bushel.

There’s no word yet on casting or on which other Bewitched characters might return. So let’s speculate wildly. Who would you like to see play Samantha? Darrin? Endora?
