Before You Make Thanksgiving Plans, Please Listen to Rachel Maddow

The morning political post will be up momentarily, but I wanted to amplify this video from Rachel Maddow’s show last night. We’ve all probably read about or seen scores and scores of accounts of those with COVID-19, many heartbreaking, some enraging, some both heartbreaking and enraging (this morning’s The Daily podcast is a good example of the latter), and yet this remains one of the most effective cautionary tales.

Don’t think about it as risking your own life. Think about it in terms of risking the life of the person you love the most, and if you are thinking about spending Thanksgiving with your extended family, there’s probably a good chance that one or more of the people you love the most will be there, and if you spend Thanksgiving with them this year, they might not be alive for Christmas.

Listen: I think it was Pfizer that said that they’d have enough vaccine for 20 million people by the end of the year, and then another 25 million in January and 25 million in February. Let’s say they can produce 30 million in March, and let’s also say that Moderna can produce as much vaccine as Pfizer through March. That’s enough for 200 million people. Add that to the 15-20 million people who will have already been infected, and subtract children (who are low risk and will get the vaccine last), and you’re looking at the very real possibility that we’ll be able to safely go see the next Bond film in April. Maybe you can even take your parents.
