The newest reality show on the block, Freeform’s Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise follows a famous-ish cast of people living on the Cayman Islands, including Elizabeth Chambers, the ex-wife of Armie Hammer. Episode one is basically the Elizabeth show, and she does not come off well, which is to say she’s someone who claims to have “no filter” after telling some chick she just met that her boyfriend hooked up with her friend and her mission on the show seems to be promoting her business, Bird Bakery, a “Premiere nostalgic bakery and restaurant” that, according to the website, sells “cupcakes, pies, bars, cookies” and, of course, “bird food.” She also says things like, “I am judicious about with whom I share my time, and I don’t need to have a big social life,” after being invited to a party. So, she sucks.

But let’s get to why you came here and why I bothered watching in the first place: the divorce between Chambers and Hammer, which she claims was a classic case of the “Cayman curse.”

“The Cayman curse is when a couple moves to the island together and then ends up separating, or breaking up, or divorcing,” Chambers says on the show. “And it tracks.”

“I went through a very public divorce. It was riddled with scandal, and stories were coming out each day, horrific articles, and I was learning about them as it happened,” she continues. “The life that we had planned for years basically shattered. That was a really painful period of time. Doing that on a more public platform, it was absolute hell, and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone.”

Chambers first filed for the dissolution of their marriage in July 2020 after being married to Hammer for 10 years. The following year was when shit hit the fan for Hammer, and their divorce was finalized in June of last year.

Later in the episode, another cast member accuses Chambers of cyberbullying her because she thought she was one of “Armie’s chicks,” and this girl has receipts. Aaaand then it ends on the cliffhanger of everyone getting Google alerts about that “Armie Hammer Breaks His Silence” interview and it makes “Elizabeth look like a psycho.”

When asked about it in a confessional, Chambers said, “End of discussion,” and then, “Ultimately only I know the truth.” This drama is clearly the sole reason the show exists, and everything else is just padding.

New episodes of Grand Cayman air on Tuesday nights on Freeform and stream on Hulu the next day.
