The Queens Gambit is a new Netflix series that is neither about Queens or Gambit. In fact, the series — which stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, Split) — is about chess, or more accurately, a Kentucky orphan in the 1950s who mixes chess with a tranquilizer addiction. “Beth transforms into an impressively skilled and glamorous outcast while determined to conquer the traditional boundaries established in the male-dominated world of competitive chess.”
The coming-of-age series is based on a novel by Walter Tevis, and comes to us from the folks who also brought us Godless, namely writer and director Scott Frank. It also stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Harry Melling and Bill Camp. Here’s the trailer:
The Queen’s Gambit premieres on October 23rd.
