Who says you can’t learn a thing or two while watching a late-night show? Monsters, that’s who! There was a time when the late-night landscape was a place for celebrities to plug their latest projects and tell stories about setting their kitchens on fire. Don’t forget segments with professional animal handlers! Now, there is absolutely still room for that stuff, but shows are evolving and moving away from it and there’s no better example of that than The Amber Ruffin Show.
If you’re familiar with this site, you know I love The Amber Ruffin Show. It’s got the kind of unabashed silliness and humor I’ve always wanted from a show like this. It’s supported by a top-tier writing staff, wonderful bits and actors, and cohost extraordinaire Tarik Davis, and it’s led by Amber herself, a delightful, smart, funny host who was built for a show like this.
It’s not all silly fun either, as evidenced by one of the show’s strongest recurring segments: How Did We Get Here? In the HDWGH, Amber dives deep into a current issue. Amber isn’t the first to do this type of segment. You can see something similar with Seth Myers or John Oliver and hosts like Stephen Colbert or Jimmy Kimmel will often allow their opening monologues to journey into this territory. However, what makes Amber’s so exciting is that her show is still in its infancy and yet she has already found her voice.
The newest HDWGH segment is about Culture Wars, and how they’re bullshit. Watch here.
