Sure, sure, the killer of Jason Blossom was unveiled in the penultimate episode of season one. But Riverdale has more in store for its big finale this Thursday.

According to the official plot synopsis, “Chapter 13: The Sweet Hereafter” will feature Betty confronting her mom, which is sure to mean some savory scenery-chewing from the deliciously campy Madchen Amick. Hermione Lodge will go all Godfather, making Fred Andrews an offer he can’t refuse. And some more shocking Blossom family secrets will mean a shake-up for Cheryl. But that’s just the tip of this sticky maple iceberg!

The promo for the final ep teases “new secrets” and “something wicked this way comes.” Give it a watch, and then we’ll highlight its reveals.

This glimpse of bloody fingers suggests Betty is once more pushed to her breaking point. Could we see the return of Dark Betty? If so, triflers better scurry.

A shot of Sheriff Keller gawking at a package of drugs, assures we’ll dig deeper into the Blossom’s dirty sticky side business.

But the bigger shock comes with this scene of violence at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe, where the titular proprietor is being manhandled by a masked and seemingly armed assailant!

Damp Cheryl warming up fireside suggests “The Sweet Hereafter” will flash back to that fateful Independence Day where Jason went missing. Could new clues be uncovered that complicate the murder case?

And might this push the Blossom’s only remaining heir to burn the family’s gothic mansion to cinders? That might seem a leap, but where else in Riverdale are you finding such posh carpeting paired with gold candelabras?

Still, the biggest tease posed by the promo might take us back to Sweet Water River, where the whole mystery started, where Jason’s corpse was recovered, and where it seems Archie and the gang are struck with a new terror, lying just beneath its frozen surface. (Spy more pics from the ep at Coming Soon).

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had warned of more death before the end of season. Last week, we might have assumed he was alluding to caught-on-tape murderer, Clifford Blossom. But could it be season one will end with Archie coming across another body in that sinister river? And how might this tie to rumors of a new “dark” character being introduced? And could it be Sabrina, the teen witch?

In cheerier news, Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted about the reprisal of Betty and Veronica’s bonding. And at long goddamn last, Jughead will eat a burger.

Dustin and I are debating the meaning of this intensely. Is it to fill him in the wake of the void this solved case has left in his life? Or is this his subtle way of signalling, “Where’s the beef?” suggesting Clifford isn’t the only killer in this not-so-sweet smalltown?

On top of all this intrigue and squee, we get the return of Josie and the Pussycats. Sure, they got sidelined once Val wisely dumped Archie’s doofy ass, but now they’re back! And on stage!

As—um—Archie’s back-up singers.

Okay. It’s not all good news. Archie’s still lead/poster boy for male mediocrity at this teen drama’s gooey center. But hey, maybe he’ll fall in that deadly river next.

Riverdale airs Thursday at 9/8c on The CW.
