'You're the Worst' Recap: Linsday Takes 'Chew her Ass Out' Very Literally

This feels like a good point to stop, and get our bearings, yes? We’re now a mere two weeks from the series finale of You’re The Worst, meaning the next two thirty-minute episodes need to tackle both the wedding and the (possible) break-up of Jimmy and Gretchen (I am unwilling, at this point, to concede the break-up, for reasons that I’ll address shortly). Let’s start with the things we learned this week:

— Lindsay means it when she says she’s going to chew someone’s ass out. Also, Lindsay isn’t good at being a lesbian despite the coaching of Vernon who had two moms (bonus thing we learned).

— Likewise, Lindsay’s Lesbian Haircut is just Paul hair.

— Gretchen, despite my suspicions based on previous episodes, has not gotten sober. Also, she’s probably not pregnant.

— Gretchen and Jimmy both continue to make slow progress toward being better people, and better to each other. Gretchen should have told Jimmy earlier what was going on with her. Jimmy should have talked to Gretchen earlier about what he knew was happening to her. So no one’s doing great yet. But when Jimmy realized it was time to address the depressed elephant in the room, he did so in a way that was understanding and caring. For her part, Gretchen was as open and honest as she was able to be, and didn’t shy away from the fact that she wasn’t doing great. It’s the kind of slow, scary steps that the show lives on.

— Jimmy and Gretchen picked a very different dress for her than I would.

— Edgar is a surprisingly good friend, and I’m thrilled he isn’t the cartoon version of himself he was a season ago.

— Gretchen Cutler crying continues to break me every. single. time.

— *Deep breath* Gretchen told the guy at the bar that she was “almost married once.”

BUT WE DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS YET. Maybe she’s lying to him. Maybe this is an elaborate game that Jimmy and Gretchen are playing similar to Fuck Week but without the duplicity. Maybe EVERYTHING IS FINE.

Or, and more likely, Jimmy and Gretchen didn’t make it down the aisle because of their fundamental differences, and because at some point, things just got to be too hard. I’ve been emotionally bracing myself for the fact that there might be a scene at the upcoming wedding (this thing is ending at a wedding, creating the perfect mirror for the first episode) where Jimmy and Gretchen are jokey and tender with each other in a way that you can only be with someone you once desperately loved, after you realize there’s nothing left to cover. But I might need some more time. What I hadn’t considered until last night is that what we might get instead is the scene where Gretchen and Jimmy decide maybe to give it another shot. (That’s, of course, if they’re broken up, which I’m not accepting as inevitable yet.) If that is the case, and we see Jimmy and Gretchen keep trying over and over again with each other despite not being great at it just because, deep down, they don’t want anyone else, I will sit quietly in the corner and cry until the end of time.

Additional Notes

Killian is back! It’s his first appearance in two years, which is why you might not have recognized him.

He’s the kid who used to hang out in Jimmy and Edgar’s apartment all the time because his deadbeat dad was always getting sloshed at the local bar (and that reveal was a lot of fun in and of itself, because it turns out we had seen Killian’s father several times before it was revealed that it was his father).

Anyway, Killian’s dad has sobered up, and in case you didn’t catch it amid the repeated references to Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher, Killian found religion. He’s a Scientologist. “Hey! You know what I just caught on cable? Jack Reacher. It’s really good. You should tell people it’s good. Can I count on you to tell people it’s good, Jimmy?”

— The mustache that Edgar wears at the dog park is the same mustache that Jimmy wore in season one.

— The dude at the dog park was Josh Alexander, Aya Cash’s real-life husband.

Meaning, one other thing we learned this week is that Cash is part of a smoking hot, ginger couple. I’d expect nothing less from Gretchen.
