Greetings, true believers. So the suddenly aggressive marketing push for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class continues, and now we have a new trailer. Which is, unsurprisingly, remarkably similar to the old trailer. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching — it is. In fact, do that now.

So what’s new? Well, there’s Banshee, which is pretty fuckin’ sweet. A little more of Azazel, the character that I’m the most puzzled by, in terms of his addition. Other than that? Most of it’s stuff we’ve seen. But you know what else it has? James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender being fucking awesome.

And honestly? That’s a decent part of the reason I’m psyched to see it. Because no matter how crappy the script is or isn’t, how poorly it fits into the X-Men chronology and mythos, at the end of the day, it will promintently feature McAvoy and Fassbender. Being fucking awesome.

Also, let me just cut some of you off: Yes, Havok’s beams are the wrong color. And yes, he shouldn’t even be here. Yes, the chronology and history is fucked. Yes, I realize that Angel isn’t here. Yes, I realize that Cyclops isn’t here either, and that they, along with Jean Grey, are the real first class. I realize all of these things.

I don’t give a shit. Look, comic book movies are like Marvel’s Ultimate universe. Reimagined origins, with the same basic theory. Comic books will never be faithfully adapted. All we can ask for is that they are faithful to the ideas, to the characters, to the philosophy. Do I really care that it’s the wrong lineup? Not particularly. I care that they take the characters that they’ve chosen, and that they treat them well and honestly and make them feel like real people, like the great comic book writers did. That’s what I want.

That, and the whole McAvoy/Fassbender Fucking Awesomeness thing.
