Sony Pictures still has until June 30th — when actors’ contracts expire — to come to an agreement with someone to bring Dan Harmon’s Community back for a sixth season (and one would think, a movie), but those prospects are not looking bright. According to TVLine, Hulu has abandoned negotiations, and since Hulu was the only viable suitor, Community’s uncancellation is a long shot.
Sony, however, will continue to shop Community around, but given how relatively little outrage there was when NBC cancelled the show, and the fact that there’s not a groundswell of passionate support for the return of Community, it’s probably time to stick a fork in the Ass Crack Bandit. Had NBC cancelled after the third season, there would probably be enough online fervor to push the two sides together, but most people we’re fine with leaving well enough alone after the season five finale.
Speaking of Dan Harmon, I finally got around to watch the back half of Rick and Morty over the weekend, and even as someone who typically abhors animated television, I have to admit the series had probably the funniest season of television this year (or at least, neck-and-neck with Veep), and episode 8, “Rixty Minutes” has my early vote for best comedy episode of 2014. It’s a potent mix of Community, Doctor Who and Bath Salts, or exactly the kind of show Dan Harmon would make without network limitations.
