Since we can’t have any more Cylons or Bill Adama, and there’s no Ex Machina 2: I’m Coming to Kill You; if Mad Men and Breaking Bad are never coming back, AMC’s foray into Artificial Intelligence may be just the thing to plug all our empty holes. (Yeah, that doesn’t sound right.) But seriously, no matter how many times SyFy says it’s putting the science fiction back into its line-up, they haven’t managed to pull us in with a high quality new series, so it only makes sense for a cable channel like AMC to give us what we need. Based on the Swedish series Äkta människor (Real Humans), the AMC/Channel 4 co-production is set in a “parallel timeline” to our own, when many homes are outfitted with their own android aka “Synth” attendants, some of which become almost like another family member. But you know how these sorts of things go; almost nobody’s content to spend his/her life as a servant, no matter how cozy it gets, and robots are no exception. Freedom, it’s what’s for dinner. Humans focuses on the effect Synths have on two households; one headed up by William Hurt. The series also features Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Sherlock, The Honourable Woman), Neil Maskell (Utopia), Tom Goodman-Hill (Mr. Selfridge, The Hollow Crown, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Colin Morgan (The Fall, Merlin, Doctor Who), Rebecca Front (Inspector Lewis, The Thick of It), and Gemma Chan (Sherlock, Fresh Meat, Secret Diary of a Call Girl). That’s a helluva great cast!
I didn’t read too far into the descriptions about the original Swedish series for fear of spoiling myself, so
it’s a sure thing it’s only a guess that things’ll go badly. The trailers indicate I may be right.
Hey honey, you got a “headache?” No problemo.
Humans is written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), was filmed in London, and premieres on AMC and Channel 4, June 28th.
