Yesterday we talked about Matthew Weiner’s upcoming film debut, Are You Here. Right on the heels of that post, the movie’s trailer has now been released. My initial reaction to the idea of this film was extreme excitement, even though (as was brought up in yesterday’s comments section) when it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, the reviews were middling at best. Weiner talked about the initial reaction in an interview with EW.
Though it was one of the fest’s more anticipated movies, the response was mixed. Weiner stayed above the fray, though. He says he’d heard a few rumblings, but overall, his experience in Toronto was positive. “I just continued the process of making the movie. I treated it as a screening,” he says. The final product, he adds, is “actually quite a bit different than it was at Toronto.”
I feel like the “mix” of those “rumblings” has to be pretty heavily weighted to the sh*tty side for an interviewer to bring that up with a director (unless said interviewer is maybe just a dick). And, yes, the noted problems with the film— its length, its rambling— wouldn’t be seen in a trailer anyway. So I suppose we should take this with a couple grains of salty self-restraint, huh?
Still, this will be a film that I continue to be excited about right up until the moment I see it. And then, well… Weiner has built up enough love that I doubt one VOD flop could kill it.
