Please don’t tell me I’m supposed to take this seriously, because I really, truly cannot. I’m sorry to have to take on the impeccable Liv Ullmann this way, but what in the Sam Hill is going on here? And how can Colin Farrell say these lines with a straight face? (“We make love for fun — yes it is a game, and we play it when we get time off from work.”) Why would Jessica Chastain do this? Is she trying to steal Colin’s eyelashes, or prepping him for the Ludovico technique?
Don’t even get me started on Samantha Morton? Honestly, just watch this trailer and try not to bust a gut. I dare you.
Based on August Strindberg’s 1888 play, Miss Julie has been adapted to film (and opera/ballet) many times, but this period drama about an Upstairs/Downstairs-ish relationship between an aristocratic woman and her father’s valet probably shouldn’t come off as bad comedy, or worse…Shades of Grey competition. I do hope the final product is better than this trailer indicates. The film is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
