Good things come to those who wait. So it is with the McDonagh Brothers, the writer-directors who have become some of the finest purveyors of razor-sharp black comedy working today, and who — thanks to their alternating work schedule — never let us wait for too long.
In Bruges (2008), Martin McDonagh
The Guard (2011), John Michael McDonagh
Seven Psychopaths (2012), Martin McDonagh
Calvary (2014), John Michael McDonagh
Here we come to a break in the pattern, however, because while it should be Martin’s turn now, his Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won’t be blessing us with its presence until 2017.
So instead here we have John Michael again, and the first trailer for his War On Everyone, starring Michael Peña and Alexander Skarsgård:
So here’s the thing: based on just the trailer, that seems good, if unremarkable. All is at it should be and there should be no cause for alarm, however, because the McDonagh Brothers movies do not strong trailers make. Their movies are layered, character-dependent, and to be consumed as a whole. One of their names attached to a project is all the trailer a person should need.
War On Everyone is being distributed by Saban films in the U.S., though no date has thus far been announced.
