Or should I say, Now with Less Dick? Either way, the Essential Killing trailer looks a heck of a lot better than anything else Vincent Gallo has ever done—and so it must be, as his completely wordless performance as a suspected terrorist won the Best Actor award at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Writer/Director Jerzy Skolimowski’s (Four Nights with Anna) breathless tale of a man on the lam also won the Special Jury Prize after Quentin Tarantino (Jury President) asked for the Festival’s rules to be broken so that two major awards could be given to one film; Essential Killing went on to win many international awards. But, what can be more powerful than awards is a trailer’s ability to get people interested in seeing a film and this clip, with its gorgeous cinematography and palpable tension does the job well.

Gallo’s Mohammed manages to escape when, while being transported from his homeland desert to an undisclosed location in Europe, his captors’ transport vehicle crashes. He is forced to go on the run in completely foreign and treacherous territory (beautifully captured by cinematographer Adam Sikora). Skolimowski’s script is said to effectively keep up the suspense until the very end and it is purposely never made clear whether Mohammed is in fact a terrorist or not.

Essential Killing also stars Emmanuelle Seigner (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, La Vie en Rose and will be distributed by Tribeca Film this spring.
