A Dopey But Important Emma Stone, Steve Carell Movie Is Just What We Need Right Now
After a long day of Trump, the trailer for Battle of the Sexes feels like a salve. It’s a movie about the real-life tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King in what was and still is the most watched tennis match of all time (90 million people worldwide watched it). It was basically a match between a sexist pig and a female activist (and number one women’s player in the world, at the time). I love this detail about the match from Wikipedia:
Riggs was given $50,000 to wear a yellow Sugar Daddy jacket during the match, which he took off after three games. Riggs also placed many bets on and invested a lot of money in the match. King entered the court in a chair carried by four bare-chested muscle men dressed in the style of ancient slaves. Riggs followed in a rickshaw drawn by a bevy of scantily clad models. Riggs presented King with a giant lollipop and she gave him a piglet.
Of course, this movie is only good if Billie Jean King wins, right?
Spoilers: I looked. She won. In three straight sets.
