Too Much Skinny Rogen, Not Enough Christoph Waltz

The first trailer for Green Hornet (which is totally not Green Arrow or Green Lantern, Suck it, TK!) is out, and here’s what’s remarkable about it: I don’t hate it. Not at all. That’s only surprising, I suppose, because of all the negative press that Green Hornet has been getting — the rumors that the studio hated it, rumors that seemed to be validated when the movie was pushed from December to the January dumping grounds (giving the studio more time to add 3D elements, so says the studio). But, as we all know, a trailer isn’t ultimately the ideal marker for how good a film will be, although a trailer certainly is capable of putting folks in seats. This trailer has $22 million opening written all over it, which is decent, but not great, for a comic-book movie.

Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry are kind of the last people you’d expect in a comic-book movie, but then again, from the looks of the trailer, it doesn’t look too comic-book-y. It doesn’t look very Michel Gondry-ey, either. It mostly looks like a Seth Rogen movie, with gadgets and guns instead of bowls and pipes. The focus in this first trailer is mostly on Rogen and his sidekick, Jay Chou, to the fortunate exclusion of Cameron Diaz, but the unfortunate exclusion of Christoph Waltz, who is the film’s real selling point.

I’d totally see this movie. I’d probably be ultimately disappointed, but I’d totally give it a shot based on the trailer.
