Alright, so, Alicia Vikander’s pretty awesome right? We can all agree on that?
The Swedish actress was fantastic as a tragic android in Ex Machina, and though she sometimes can come across as a bit wooden she has regardless proven to be a reliably entertaining and dramatically capable presence in everything else (even The Man from U.N.C.L.E. which was a somewhat thankless role for her and is also a movie I can’t for the life of me figure out whether I liked or not.)
So while me, you, and other movie nerd types have known about Vikander for quite some time, she has yet to have that big WOW moment that would propel her into the consciousness of the general public. She hasn’t really done a big franchise—the dead-on-arrival rebooted Bourne doesn’t count—and she hasn’t had a big blockbuster. The new Tomb Raider movie feels like it’s angling to maybe fill this gap.
And for that, marketing is important.
Obviously, we saw what happened when they tried their hand at the poster side of things.
Does the trailer do any better?

A few things strike me right off the bat:
1. Vikander sure can pull off the Lara look.
2. Walton Goggins is always welcome.
3. Between the setting, the lead-up to the setting, and the ridiculous leaps, this movie sure looks like it’s taking a fair bit of inspiration from the first in the rebooted series of Tomb Raider games. The boat sequence; the rusty old warplane—the gamers among us will have some deja vu I think.
Other than that, proceedings look disappointingly—and yet predictably—generic. Even boring.

And it was directed by Norwegian Roar Uthaug. I am very much a fan of Scandinavian cinema, but I must confess I haven’t seen any of his previous efforts.
One thing’s for sure, this moment definitely did not work:
