Jack Chick wrote one of the greatest bits of comedy in the twentieth century with his “Dark Dungeons” tract telling the terrible truth about the evils of role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. The fact that he didn’t intend it as comedy and is in fact bat shit crazy does not detract in anyway whatsoever from the entertainment value of his work. Oh, the fact that there were veritable witchhunts and bookburnings during the eighties because of jackasses like him and the unthinking dullards who listened to him, was certainly a negative. But if we can’t laugh at them, what can we do?
Well, one filmmaker had a bright idea. Making a parody of people like Chick is just a pointless endeavor because they’re already self-parodies. How can you mock someone whose every word is more insane than the last, grounded in a version of reality that has no connection whatsoever with actual events in the real world?
The answer is to simply tell the story completely straight, with no embellishment, no tongue in cheek. Don’t give them the dignity of mockery. Just repeat their words and their ideas with a completely straight face and let the ideas themselves bear witness to their own idiocy.
Here’s the trailer for Dark Dungeons, made with the express consent of Jack Chick, because he thinks the following is perfectly reasonable and sees no reason why anyone would think it humorous:
Trust me when I say, that this is EXACTLY what playing Dungeons and Dragons is like.
