Do you know why, regardless of how much we enjoy our Kill Bills, our Matrix’s, our Bourne Identity films, American action movies will always be inferior to some of those on the foreign market? Because the actors in movies like The Raid actually know how to fight. It’s not bullet-time, it’s not six weeks of, like, really intensive training regimen, man. It’s not funky camera angles and stuntmen. It’s men like Indonesian actor Iko Uwais, a pencak silat fighter who is, quite frankly, a brutal ballet in motion. He’s unreal. Uwais is the star of The Raid, directed by Gareth Evans, who also directed him in the sublime martial arts actioner Merantau. Here’s the synopsis, via Slashfilm:

The Raid follows a elite SWAT team as they raid a rundown apartment, which is ruled by a ruthless drug lord named Tama who uses the location to shelter his junkies, drifters, enforcers and killers. When their cover is blown, Tama puts a bounty on the members of the squad which is echoed over the loudspeaker system across the apartment compound. With no reinforcements coming to their aid, Rama and his men must try to survive and escape this apartment highrise full of killers.

Interesting that they mention the music being by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. The thing about Shinoda is… he’s an immensely talented DJ — he just happens to be in a shitty, derivative band. But I’ll bet he could put together a pretty kickass score.
