If you’ve got a thing for violent thrillers or crime series (Utopia, The Night Manager, Mad Dogs) British or non, The Last Panthers is already on your must-see list. Even if that type of series isn’t always your thing, Panthers’ excellent cast, and the fact that Bowie lent one of his last tunes as the opening titles theme should at least merit your attention. Starring Samantha Morton as not-your-average insurance adjuster, and John Hurt as her iniquitous boss, plus A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim as the headlining cop, and we’re off and running after Serbian jewel thief Milan Celik, played by Goran Bogdan. If you’re wondering if these particular Panthers have anything to do with the infamous Pink variety, indeed Celik’s gang pulls off a trademark heist that sets Morton’s Naomi Franckom and Rahim’s Khalil Rachedi on an international chase.
Directed by Johan Renck (Bloodline, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings), and created/written by Jack Thorne (Skins, Shameless, This Is England), The Last Panthers also attracted Bowie; Blackstar (the song) was inspired by and — written while collaborating with Renck — for the series. In turn, Renchk directed the song video that haunts us all.
The Last Panthers airs in 6 parts on Sundance Channel, beginning April 13th. Check out the first tease here.
