And so here we finally have it.
Any words that I put before this embed will have about as much meaning as me banging a wok with a wooden spoon so let’s just get to it shall we?
Quick fire thoughts as a huge fan of the books and a lover of movies:
1. Idris Elba is going to make a fantastic Roland. I was on board from the start but any reservations anyone might have had about his casting must surely have dissipated upon hearing him intone the Gunslinger’s mantra. Elba’s delivery of ‘I do not kill with my gun; I kill with my heart,’ sent shivers up my spine.
2. We’ve known for quite some time that a number of pretty substantial changes have been made to the plot in bringing this to the big screen. This is both necessary from a creative perspective—the books as they are being pretty much unfilmable, or at least in need of tweaks in order to work in a movie format—and understandable from a story-telling standpoint—I am loath to write spoilers here in case anyone has not read the books yet, but a different plot line being followed to the original one on the page makes perfect sense considering the ending of the books.
3. The list of creatives behind the camera is a mixed bag. Some of the reported production troubles don’t exactly instil confidence. For someone who has been dying to see a screen adaptation of the ‘Dark Tower’ novels, I would caution inspires careful, measured optimism, at best. That being said, bring on August!
