Between Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox and Vanity Fair covergirl Caitlyn Jenner, transwomen are having a big cultural moment. So cue the well-timed prestige pic.
Behold The Danish Girl’s first trailer.
Okay, on the plus side: We love us some Alicia Vikander. Eddie Redmayne is considered by many to be an actor of incredible talent and range, and it looks like here the Oscar-winning Theory of Everything star is doing his damndest to be true the real-life woman the film is based on, Lili Elbe. And as it’s taken years for its producers to pull the film together, we believe there’s an earnest desire to do right by Elbe’s legacy and by trans representation.
But guys. GUYS.
This is a trans story that could have major impact. And at its helm is Tom Hooper, who has delivered The King’s Speech and Les Miserables, which are two mediocre movies that are wildly and mysteriously overrated. Both are big boisterous dramas that have powerful moments, but also are shockingly artless in their execution and occasionally tone deaf (in emotional moments and musical ones).
Thankfully The Danish Girl isn’t bearing the sole burden of representation this fall. There’s also About Ray, which stars Elle Fanning as a trans teen who is struggling to get his family to see him as he sees himself. Director Gaby Dellal’s star-studded cast includes Susan Sarandon, Naomi Watts and Tate Donovan.
Excuse me a moment.
About Ray opens September 18th; The Danish Girl opens November 27th.
