Neill Blomkamp is probably my favorite director working today. His debut District 9 is one of the best science fiction films of the last decade, in visuals, emotional appeal, and ideas. His sophomore effort Elysium wasn’t as good on an independent level, but was a perfectly fine entry into the overall body of work. I thoroughly disagree with the critics who dismiss his work as the simplistic and trite though visually interesting result of putting a special effects dude in charge of his own films. He eats cat food and folds her origami flowers, don’t you have any feelings people?
So his third film is turning to artificial intelligence and from the general description of an accidentally artificially intelligent robot on the run from those who want to melt it down or exploit it, having hijinks with folks who have no business teaching an AI about being human, it’s understandably getting some blow back as “dark and gritty South African Short Circuit”.
Now watch the trailer:
And make one more goddamned Steve Guttenberg joke, because this looks wonderful.
