We last checked in on James Purefoy and Solomon Kane when we only had a Russian language trailer to watch. Now we get it in English! Slashfilm found this neat little widget that not only has the trailer, but several other vignettes put together by the studio showcasing fight scenes, creatures, etc.
See here’s the problem with trailers … this doesn’t look at face value any different than a dozen other swords and monsters films, but little details that distinguish a good action film from a crappy one just get lost in the noise of a trailer. There seems to be some beautiful and creative creature design, but only flashes can be seen in the context of a trailer. We’ve got a dark and brooding hero hiding from a violent past, something beyond cliched at this point, but cliches get their start because they’ve worked so well when done right over the years. There’s a horrible pilgrim hat, but you’ve got to give some credit to the director basically saying “look I don’t care if Van Helsing wore a hat like that and sucked, the books say he wears this hat, so he’s bloody well wearing this hat.”
Plus, in Jame Purefoy they’ve got Mark Antony himself. I know Pullo is one career step from just playing “Thug #3” and Vorenus is on fricking “Grey’s Anatomy” but one of those badasses from “Rome” has to be able to translate to the big screen, right?
