As Dustin noted in his Comic-Con coverage, Robert Rodriguez has teased Sin City 3. To that, I say “Good luck, buddy. Hardly anyone remembers what happened in the first movie that happened nine years ago.” This is one of the many reasons that Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For is doomed. Audiences have forgotten all about Basin City, and only poor-taste geeks (myself included) who have read the comics retained any nostalgia for the first movie.
The marketing of this film hasn’t helped matters. The star of this movie, Eva Green, was deemed too sexy by the MPAA. ABC also refused to show Green’s boob curves in a trailer. So, Rodriguez and Frank Miller have banked their campaign on Jessica Alba, who plays the non-stripping stripper with a tarnished heart of gold, Nancy. The problem is that Nancy does very little in the source material besides lose her mind because her savior cop (Bruce Willis) has died. She slashes her face up. It’s not sexy, and those stark white bandages look ridiculous. I’m not sure that RR is upset by this turn of events because he loves Alba. He’s the only director who hires her anymore because he still thinks it’s 2007.
All of this is a real bummer because there’s so much talent involved in this film. Joseph Gordon-Levitt! And Clive Owen has been replaced by Josh Brolin, which is fine because that character got a new face in the comics. Let’s face it — this sequel is going to be a f—king mess. Luckily, there is a new red-band trailer so that you can see naked Eva Green skinny dipping. Too late?
