A few months ago I was rolling my eyes about Man Up. Already I was casting it into the pile of Simon Pegg duds (Run Fatboy Run, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, A Fantastic Fear of Everything, Hector and the Search for Happiness…), all because of this U.K. trailer.
I like Simon Pegg. I like Lake Bell. I appreciate a good rom-com. But this premise of a woman stealing a blind date goes from quirky to ludicrous the longer this con goes on, right? And the trailer makes it seem like the pair are dating for a while before she’s discovered.
So it was with low expectations that I saw Man Up at the Tribeca Film Festival last spring, and was totally and pleasantly surprised. One key thing the trailer infuriatingly ignores is that the whole film takes place in one day. It’s not many dates, but one of those epic long ones. In this instance it involves bowling, banter, dance sequence, and even a sidesplitting parody of a triathlon. Basically, Man Up is great!
With its U.S. release fast approaching, the marketing team has their act together, releasing a clip that nicely encapsulates the film’s madcap energy and sharp wit, all while showing that Simon Pegg is exactly the kind of guy that could make a girl steal a blind date.
And hey look! A new trailer with some pullquotes in it from yours truly:
Man Up will open in New York and Los Angeles on November 13th.
Kristy Puchko may have yelped with joy in the film’s lovably absurd finale.
