I don’t know what it says about me that the newly released trailer for Coco, Pixar’s upcoming movie about a Mexican boy who travels to the Land Of The Dead to meet his musical idol, is already making me start to well up a little bit. It’s not even that sad. Do you think the response is Pavlovian at this point?
Here, see how you manage:
Already people are comparing it to Book Of Life, Spirited Away, and Kubo And The Two Strings (personally I got more of a Corpse Bride vibe because of all the dead people, but I can definitely understand the Miyazaki-ness of it all), so it’ll be interesting to see if Pixar can make something revolutionary out of a conceit we’ve more or less seen before. Hey, it worked with Disney and Moana, right?
Speaking of which, this movie’s gonna have to be amazing to make everybody forget that Disney tried to trademark the term “Dio De Los Muertos” for merchandising purposes when Pixar first announced this project in 2012. I’m expecting to gleefully sob through the entire thing when it hits theaters in November 22. Who’s with me?
