When Passengers was originally announced, a huge deal was made of the fact that a studio was willing to bet $150 million on an original property. It’s a rare thing these days, although when studios do shell out the big bucks for original properties, it seems to go to space movies, like Gravity and Interstellar.
Passengers paid the two biggest stars at the time of their signing — Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt — very large sums of money to star here. Lawrence is getting $20 million, while Pratt will receive $12 million for a movie with very few supporting players. It’s about a a ship meant to travel to another planet over the course of 100 years while its passengers are in sleep hibernation. Two of those passengers, however, wake up early. Super early, and they are forced to, presumably, live out the rest of their lives on the spacecraft while navigating various dangers.
