Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) has made a thriller involving a computer screen, a contest, a starlet, and her fan.
It’s another movie that has a woman being threatened and sexually objectified for the purpose of thrilling and entertaining the audience. How original.
Elijah Wood plays the webmaster of a fan site for actress Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey). He is informed that he is the winner of a contest that will allow him to meet his favorite actress. Then he gets a call that the meeting has been cancelled. As a consolation prize, however, some creeper with an accent has given Wood’s character access to all of the private cameras of Jill Goddard. Then we begin to see the danger, the requisite nude scene, and Elijah Wood running with a computer. Meh.
The premise is interesting, but the execution seems to be flawed in the footage that we’re given. There could be something interesting built around the idea of a super fan given access to their favorite celebrity and witnessing them commit a crime or a crime committed against them and then working to investigate. Instead it looks like Wood’s character is a pawn in someone else’s sick game and instead of being trapped in a phone booth with a sniper threatening his life, he’s got a laptop he has to lug around on car chases. I’ll be interested to see the final product.
