Old-School James Gunn Is Back with 'The Belko Experiment,' or 'The Office' Meets 'The Purge'

Before James Gunn was the guy behind Guardians of the Galaxy, he was a Troma guy, and you could see that in his excellent, under-appreciated horror-comedy Slither. He also wrote Dawn of the Dead and the story for Scooby Doo, but we’ll conveniently ignore that last point.

I still don’t quite understand how he went from Slither to Guardians, but I’m glad that it happened, although I am sad it’s taken him away from his Troma roots. Fear not, however, because while he doesn’t direct The Belko Experiment (that task goes to Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean), he wrote the screenplay, and based on the trailer, you can sense it: It’s The Office meets The Purge, and it stars — among others — Tony Goldwyn, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Rooker, and John C. McGinley.
