Okay, So Maybe Calling An End To The James Franco Backlash Was A Bit Premature: The Broken Tower Trailer

Now, I’m not saying The Broken Tower, Franco’s love letter of a film to poet Hart Crane looks bad. It just looks like something you would except an up-his-own-butthole artist to make. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you’re supposed to get those rocks off in film school, not put it On Demand for paying customers. See for yourself.

If you want to follow along with Franco’s narration in the trailer, here are the stanza and a half that pertain (and you can read the full poem here):

The bell-rope that gathers God at dawn
Dispatches me as though I dropped down the knell
Of a spent day - to wander the cathedral lawn
From pit to crucifix, feet chill on steps from hell.

…have you not seen that corps
Of shadows in the tower…

Oh, and if you’re wondering, yes, this is the film that Franco apparently fellates an erect penis. Vulture doesn’t know whether it’s a real penis or a prosthetic one, but either way, Vincent Gallo is probably jealous and thinking of a way to blow himself for his next movie. Our own Prolixity Julien recently called James Franco a “pure artist” and I think she’s spot on with that assessment. What else can explain him, he who also co-directed a film about himself using footage from his “General Hospital” tenure?

It will be curious to see how the rest of the world handles it, if they even find out. But that’s probably why The Broken Tower is straight-to-VOD instead of getting any release in theaters, isn’t it?

Rob Payne also writes the indie comic The Unstoppable Force, tweets on the Twitter @RobOfWar, and his ware can be purchased here (if you’re into that sort of thing). He often daydreams what it would be like to do whateverthefuck you want.
