Wow, what a weekend, amirite? The news out of San Diego just WOULD. NOT. STOP. We had to rely on recaps to fill us in on all the footage that we didn’t get to see (*outstretched hands grasping for Black Panther*), but there was still plenty of new material that did wind up on the internet for our enjoyment.
Take, for instance, the new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok. Personally, I didn’t think anything could top the last one in terms of sheer giddy excitement-building, but here we are. This trailer gives us more Thor/Hulk and even Thor/Banner banter (also can we talk about how Mark Ruffalo is low-key hot AF in that blazer and t-shirt? And that’s saying something, considering he’s standing next to Chris “I’m Literally A God” Hemsworth). But it also gives us more of Cate Blanchett having a blast as Hela, breaking shit and being a total badass, and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) teaming up with his brother for a little game of lethal laser tag or something. I just can’t keep track of that dude’s shifting alliances. Also Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie continues to hold her own - she might be the movie’s secret charm bomb, and she also might have made me pregnant. That smile!
Basically the movie continues to look beautiful and batshit and Goldblum-y:
Also arriving hot on our screens, straight outta San Diego Comic-Con? A sneak peek at Justice League, the long gestating DC team-up! Look, I’ll admit that I’ve had lukewarm at best reactions to the previous DCEU installments (Wonder Woman not withstanding), so I wasn’t anticipating much from this footage. Except, you know, getting to see more of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. And we do! They clearly know they have a star on their hands and cram SO MUCH Wonder Woman into this sneak peek. You know who else gets a lot of screen time? Ezra Miller as The Flash. I’m a dedicated watcher of the CW’s version of Barry Allen, but I was still impressed. Miller comes off as fresh and quippy and charming, and seems like just the thing to balance out the often grimdark DCEU. When he says “It’s really cool, you guys seem ready to do battle and stuff. But I’ve never done battle, I’ve just pushed some people and run away,” THAT was the moment I think I moved from interested to excited. And more pregnant.
We also get some impressive shots of Batman (Ben Affleck) looking serious, Cyborg (Ray Fisher) taking over some of Batman’s gear with his hacker tentacles (man, I don’t know technology, I’m just calling ‘em like I see ‘em), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) looking like a super hot surfer who rides his Harley up and down the PCH all day, every day. That is not a complaint, that is a compliment. The trailer focuses on the state of the world without Superman in it, and how much it needs heroes. And you know what? Watching these guys come together, I’m not missing Superman. This is a Justice League I can get behind.
Also, Alfred (Jeremy Irons) cracks a joke about the good ol’ days full of scary wind-up penguins, and can we go back to that stuff someday? Not now, but like eventually? ‘K thanks.
Thor: Ragnarok arrives November 3rd, and Justice League lands November 17th. What a time to be alive! We still have to get through the rest of the summer blockbusters, but I’m calling it: We’re gonna have an Indian summer, and it’ll last straight through to Thanksgiving, and these flicks are gonna be part of the Summer That Just Wouldn’t End.
