'Money Monster' Trailer: Clooney and Roberts Make a Summer Thriller Disguised as an Issue Movie

The movie studios typically like to slip in a movie during the early part of the blockbuster season that might appeal to older audiences as a kind of counter-programming to your Marvel, D.C., and Star Wars movies. This year, the lucky recipient of the mid-range budget is a movie called Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster and starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

It’s one of those thrillers that wants you to believe that it’s an issue movie, like Denzel’s John Q. or Inside Man (also Denzel and Jodie Foster), but it’s probably just a popcorn movie for the NPR crowd given some extra heft by the Springsteen song in the trailer. I’m fine with that. I’m also fine with lampooning Jim Cramer; I’m less fine with the lampooned Jim Cramer being revealed as a man with a soul being played by George Clooney, because Jim Cramer doesn’t deserve that.

It is nice to see Julia Roberts in a movie I might actually watch, though.
