I loves me some period pieces, and though I haven’t read Matt Bondurant’s historical novel The Wettest Country In The World, I’m incredibly excited to see Lawless, director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) adaptation. It’s got a lot for it, both in terms of story and cast.
The story is about the three Bondurant brothers (the author’s grandfather and granduncles) — Jack (Shia LaBeouf, Forrest (Tom Hardy), and Howard (Howard Bondurant), bootleggers in Prohibition-era Virginia who run afoul of the law (played by a stunningly hideous Guy Pearce) as well as the mob (represented by none other than Gary Oldman). They also get involved with a couple of dames, played by Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska).
The trailer looks like a hell of a good time, and while I don’t know that any of the actors is really moving outside their comfort zone — other than Pearce, perhaps — it looks like all of them are at their best. At the very least, LeBeouf isn’t stammering and yelling “no no no” over and over, so congrats to him for extending his range.
