As I wrote two years ago, Jonathan Levine is one of my favorite directors on the planet, and I believe the most romantic. He’s the guy behind 50/50, Warm Bodies, The Wackness and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, and one of the few great young(ish) directors who hasn’t been snatched up by the superhero genre.
Levine is quietly making great, original movies on a modest budget that always get a nice return on their investments, but he never gets the attention of those guys who go on to make huge franchise films.
That’s OK. He can remain an under-appreciated director, so long as he continues to make entertaining flicks, like his next one, The Night Before. November is a big month with movies like the last Hunger Games, another Bond film, and Creed, the Rockyish sequel. But I am most looking forward to Levine’s next movie, which stars Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie, with supporting turns from Mindy Kaling, Lizzy Caplan, the fantastic Jillan Bell, Michael Shannon, and Kanye (plus Miley Cyrus).
Here’s the new trailer for it. JGL’s Wu Tang scene is fantastic.
It looks like a rowdy comedy, but trust in Levine that it will wrap up in a very sweet way that will hit you in your holiday feels.
