There’s a trailer out now for the film Jimi Hendrix: All is By My Side starring André Benjamin (André 3000) of Outkast along with Hayley Atwell and Imogen Poots. Benjamin certainly looks the part of a young Hendrix, despite being significantly older than Hendrix was when he died, never mind when he was on the verge of stardom.
There’s been a bit made of the fact that the Hendrix estate refused to allow any of Jimi Hendrix’s music to be used in this film, but I’m not sure how much of an effect that will have on the finished product. The Hendrix estate could only have rights over Hendrix’s sound recordings and his original compositions. This film cover the years 1966-1967, when Jimi Hendrix was in London prior to his debut album. One of the most famous songs of his to come out of that time was “Hey Joe”, a song originally written by Billy Roberts. So while the filmmakers wouldn’t be able to use the original Hendrix recording of “Hey Joe” they could certainly obtain the rights to use the composition and re-record it themselves. The same goes for Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor.” Unfortunately, both “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary” were written by Hendrix, so anticipate some sound-alikes there.
The film will open September 26th.
