In the last five years, Tom Cruise has managed to maintain his status as one of the few stars still capable of opening a film based on his own star power here in America, but what he does overseas is nothing short of mind boggling. Here’s the percentage of box-office gross that came from overseas for his last six Cruise-led movies: 71 percent, 73 percent, 69 percent, 63 percent, 70 percent, 71 percent.
That means, even if a movie makes only $80 million here in the states, it’s still going to put up double that overseas, which means every Tom Cruise movie is a huge hit, even Jack Reacher, one of Cruise’s less popular offerings here in America, where it made $80 million. However, it made $220 million overall with an efficient $60 million price tag.
Cruise, above all, is a great business man, and he also has a knack for boosting the profiles of the female leads in his films: Rebecca Ferguson, Rosamund Pike, Olga Kurylenko, Paula Patton, and even Emily Blunt, who became a legit action-movie star after Edge of Tomorrow.
This time out, Tom Cruise has brought along Cobie Smulders for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and while she is certainly a familiar face thanks to 9 years of How I Met Your Mother and her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cruise may be able to re-energize her career here, because Cruise is the anti-Adam Sandler when it comes to female leads.
The movie looks pretty great, too.
