I'm Beginning to Feel the Heinlein: 'Predestination' First Seven Minutes

A few months ago there was a trailer for Predestination, a low budget adaption of Heinlein’s All You Zombies. I wrote it up and confessed to very conflicted emotions. The trailer was too filled with action for me to line it up with the cerebral short story, and the plot description was just not doing it any favors, all detail without saying a damned thing about what I wanted to know: how well do they capture the best time travel story I’ve ever read?

Plus Ethan Hawke is the face of Getaway to me, an I’m not entirely sure that I will ever be capable of watching him on screen again without yelling vroooooom and beating my head into the nearest metal object until I pass out.

Well, the release date on this thing is getting closer (January 9th on VOD and a limited theatrical run) and so they’ve decide to release the first seven minutes of the film.

Goddamnit, they’re pulling me back around to being deeply excited about this. The retro-futurism, the mood from start to finish. This is clearly an expansion of the Heinlein story, which was quite short, but it feels right in the ways that that trailer just completely missed.

And as I’ve said before. If you care about science fiction, go read this story before the movie hits. Trust me. It’s got big twists, and you’re going to want to read them in print before you see them on screen. I’ll even make it easy on you, click here to read the story. It’s only 12 pages. You have the time.
