I don’t know how many of you got the chance to see the first trailer for I Love You, Phillip Morris, which we ran a few months ago. That particular trailer focused primarily on the relationship between Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) and Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), which developed during a stint in prison. This trailer, however, puts its major focus on Steven as a con artist, which I suspect will be a little more mainstream friendly (I don’t think there’s a way to get completely around the gay angle in the trailer, though this one does not feature their, er, love-making).

Anyway, the movie is about a happily married man who has one of those gay epiphanies, and decides that he wants to live life to his gay fullest, even if that requires breaking the law. Said law breaking lands him in the clink, where he falls in love with Phillip Morris, and then develops con after con to get Phillip out of prison and create a perfect life together. I’m also fairly sure that the movie is darker than the trailer portends.

Anyway, the trailer looks OK. I like the premise, at least. But Carrey is depicting a character that doesn’t actually exist anywhere in the real world. I have no idea why he’s talking the way he is — is that his “gay” voice or something. Because, if it is, that’s a little tacky.

Now everyone: Try out your “gay” voices!

Check the trailer, and let me know what you think. The movie, which premiered during last year’s Sundance and has had a hell of a time finding a distributor, finally opens just in time for Valentine’s Day.
