I Know We Can't Kill the Zombie Genre, But This Is a Promising Direction
No matter how cool a trend is, eventually, it’s going to wear out its welcome. It happened with vampires, and it’s happening now with zombies. I thought zombies were losing steam years ago, but given the insane popularity of The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and even The Strain, I’m willing to admit that I was very wrong.
It’s not that I don’t like zombie stories. I love them! But, like with any bandwagon, it quickly starts to get crowded. It’s happening now with the overloaded superhero sequels and constant origin stories. Some of them are so good it hurts. But with every studio jumping in on the current buzzword-based trend, the sea of mediocrity can devalue the great individual pieces.
Which is why this trailer for The Girl With All the Gifts has me so freaking stoked. It’s got everything. It looks to be a totally unique take on the genre, both in content and tone. It has kickass female leads, with Gemma Arterton and Glenn Close, plus hints of a breakout turn from the kid, Sennia Nanua. I haven’t read the book this is adapted from, but it sounds like (tell me if I’m wrong!) they’ve removed some of the mystery of how the story unfolds, but it looks like they kept all the suspense.
Consider me reinvested in a genre.
