American Gods, the television series based on Neil Gaiman’s literary magnum opus (Sandman is his comic magnum opus; a man can have many magnum opuses, okay?) is coming to Starz next month, and yet save for a brief Comic Con teaser we haven’t seen much of it. Well, we hadn’t until today, when Starz released the first official trailer online for us all to ogle at.

In case you’re confused and haven’t read the book on which American Gods is based: stop, do yourself a favor and go find it on Amazon or something ASAP. I recommend this not because I think the book will be “better” or because I think everyone needs to have familiarity with source material going in, but because it’s an extremely gorgeous and wonderful book and it’d be worth reading even if there weren’t a TV show. Got it? Cool.

In the meantime, while you’re waiting on that book to get to you, let’s go through the basics: Ricky Whittle plays an ex-convict who’s hired to do odd jobs for the ancient gods of old, who are stranded in America because people kept immigrating here and abandoning them. And trust me when I tell you that this trailer nails the aesthetic Gaiman is working with pretty perfectly: gritty, gorgeous magic realism steeped in immigrant-specific Americana. It’s like the Nightmare Stag from Hannibal went on a fantasy road trip and I LOVE IT.

American Gods premieres on Sunday, April 30. Until then, pick a god you’re going to start worshiping. Dibs on Bilquis. (I wouldn’t say no to Media either for Gillian Anderson but… Bilquis. Read the book, is all I’ll say.)
