We all remember how Brad Pitt fell for Angelina Jolie while making Mr. & Mrs. Smith, spurring him to leave his first wife, Jennifer Aniston. Well, wouldn’t you know it. The day that news broke of the Pitt/Jolie divorce, Paramount released a trailer for Allied, his new film, which has been described as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith in World War II.” Page Six has already asserted the cause of the Brangelina breakdown is Allied co-star Marion Cotillard. It’s a claim Cotillard’s friends were quick to refute to People. And Lainey’s got an alternate theory altogether.
Anyhow, here’s the trailer about spies in a time of love and war:
This Robert Zemeckis drama looks beautiful and vaguely interesting in the way much Oscar Bait does. But that’s not why people are going to talk about it.
Fair or not, the conversation will be dominated by Brangelina speculation. Whether the Cotillard rumor is true or not, it plays too perfectly into the gossip narrative of how Pitt and Aniston’s marriage ended, down to the plot of the movie where the affair began. But it remains to be seen how that’ll hurt or help Allied at the box office.
For what it’s worth, Paramount insists they didn’t release the trailer yesterday to ride the coat tails of Brangelina news. The studio told THR the 60-second spot above had already been tied to the premiere of the new TV drama This is Us. So, just a case of convenient timing?
Welcome to the first morning of ABE: After Brangelina Era. It’s full of conspiracy and tastes like tears dried on your pillow.
