After the success of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn project announcements started piling up pretty quickly. If you’ve read any of Flynn’s other books, you know that Gone Girl was not a literary one-hit wonder. Both Dark Places (which is coming out this Spring) and her debut novel Sharp Objects (which we haven’t heard about in a while, but is still presumably being adapted for television) are just as enthralling, if generally thematically similar (person returns to hometown to deal with murderous past leaking into the present, anyone?).
We now have a trailer for Dark Places, and while we’ve talked here before about the odd casting choices— which are only odd if you’ve read the book; otherwise, they’re fantastic— it looks spectacular. The trailer is thrilling, but director Gilles Paquet-Brenner has created a different enough visual tone, that the expected Gone Girl comparisons don’t even seem to apply.
