With the revelation that CBS chose to axe its planned Nancy Drew series because it skewed “too female” for their audiences, I wonder if Fox has any such concerns. Because if Too Female is a thing (it’s not), they should probably think about reconsidering their upcoming show Pitch.
Pitch is “a true story on the verge of happening,” about the fictional Ginny Baker, the first woman to play in the MLB. The trailer veers a bit heavy towards the melodramatic at points, but it’s a cool premise, and it looks to be executed beautifully. If this show were made by the kind of people who think the phrase “too female” is anything but nonsense garbage words, the expectation might be to go hard at the emotional stuff against a mere background of baseball. (You know, boys’ stuff.) But this show was made in partnership with Major League Baseball, and is able to make use of the league’s actual uniforms, stadiums, and analysts. They’re taking their baseball seriously, somehow managing to make a show that is both about sports AND about a woman. Crazy, right!?
